I'm looking to get out of renting My Verizon modem / router and would like something compatible with Verizon's coaxial I had the Linksys cg7500 and they said that they could not activate it when I called it had a coaxial cable but they said it was not compatible with fiber optic

You will need something Verizon has visibility too so they are the best resource for compatible modems. They may not even share the information or support the device just to keep you renting.

But to clarify,
Coaxial is for cable connections.
Fiber optic is for fibre connections. Fibre connections require a media converter.

So do you have a FTTH connection or a cable connection?

you should be able to buy it outright from the company. i was able to with mine.

You can't use a non-Verizon modem for FiOS service. You can, however, contact Verizon and have them enable the Ethernet port on the Optical Network Terminal (ONT - the box on the wall that FiOS service comes into). Right now, it will have coax coming out of it to the modem. With Ethernet enabled, you can run an Ethernet cable directly to the router of your choice, and ditch the FiOS gateway altogether (unless you have FiOS TV, in which case you have to use that box, as it routes the IP TV traffic).
