So i want to get a larger hdd to backup my main, and serve as storage for movies and tv shows. And maybe a few games that i might sometimes play, but not often.

Ive seen that surveillance and NAS hdd are a bit cheaper than others. ive read some about these kinds and it seems they can work for my purpose, but are not ideal, in that they are just a bit slower at reading the data? is there anything else? or any way to get a surveillance hdd and make it change its priority of writing data, to make it more like a normal drive? or is that something you cannot really alter?

I have $50 credit at jet.com that i am trying to get rid of. Also jet.com has 15% off for me cause a coupon.

I am looking for at least a 3 tb hdd. Probably a 4 tb hdd, so i can give less fks about how much i store for now. Also because a 4 tb hdd seems to only cost an extra $20 for a whole extra 1 tb of data from a 3 td hdd.

Ive heard bad things about Seagate hdd, in that they have a much higher failure rate? this true?

So far this seems to be the best option, $115 for a 4tb WD Blue 5400RPM , seems to get good reviews? is $115 a decent price?

Are toshiba drives any good? $115 for a 4tb, 7200 RPM
https://jet.com/product/Toshiba-HDWE140XZSTA-4TB-Internal-Hard-Disk-Drive/5ed72907d25a48718fe661edb6e1a364

Another toshiba, $95 for a 3 tb, 7200 RPM
https://jet.com/product/TOSHIBA-RETAIL-HARD-DRIVES-HDWD130XZSTA-3TB-35-INT-HDD-P300/94b46064453d4d23ab0d2d575904c3f7

Or this seagate, 4tb, can maybe get it for $115 if they price match monoprice.com
https://jet.com/product/Seagate-4TB-BarraCuda-SATA-7200RPM-35-Inch-Internal-Hard-Drive-ST4000DM005/bf0057936e844d64a0c501224a742b7d

im mainly looking at one of those 3 hdd that are 4 tb. it really comes down to seagate, vs toshiba, vs western digital? otherwise they all seem nearly identical right? any1 that i should definitely not get?

edit: theres also this surveillance seagate 4tb for $102. so its a bit cheaper, but from what ive heard i should not get it

if its for back ups you may want 2x to mirror unless you don't care about redundancy.
You can't alter how the reds/purples function
Theres higher fail rate on both toshiba and seagate vs western digital.

ok thanks.... i literally just placed the order for the toshiba because of it having slightly higher performance than the western digital blue.... but i read that toshiba is a reliable hdd. i heard that seagate does have higher failure rates though. so i should just get the western digital blue then?

and what is 2x to mirror? its partly to backup my current hdd which is around 4 years old now. but also because this hdd is 1tb and nearly full. i want to store more movies and tv shows on the 4tb hdd.

this is what made me want to get the toshiba

mirroring is raid 1 which means if either drive fails you have a back up of it.
Ideally your storage/back up should be mirrors in case it fails cause most don't back up often for 1 and for 2 you
won't have EVERYTHING on your main drive so if the back up gets fucked you lose something regardless.

ok thanks. sorry but i still dont know what "raid 1" is. can i do that on my 2nd hdd? but still be able to use some of the storage for other things? or does it require a 3rd hdd that is only used as a backup?

also im pretty sure when i order this hdd, it should come with the mounting bracket right? but i just need to buy 2 cables? 1 power cable for it, and 1 cable to send data to the mobo?

read

Power cable? how dense are you? It gets power from the PSU.
You will need to buy the mounting bracket and sata cable if you need one.
Though usually you only need a bracket for 2.5inch drives.

Does it fucking matter right now?
I mean theres no redundancy anyways so wtf does it even matter for a fraction of a percent.

If the "back up drive" holds main drive plus other files then its nto a real back up.
since it can fail and you will lose some data regardless.

If you care about the data there would be some form of redundancy for all of it not some of it.
what don't u get?

Also failure rate is by models not by brands, so you need 2 model numbers to compare and not brands.
Companies to my knowledge don't publicly release failure rates on drives so finding real specifics is hard.
