Do people believe there is a "god"?

I think it's because they are afraid of the unknown. They are afraid of death and want some soothing in knowing that there really is no purpose or plan.

Just my opinion. Would love to hear other perspectives.

That fear of the unknown exists in everyone, regardless of their metaphysical viewpoint. It's not like Christians aren't afraid of death, even when we believe we'll go to heaven. It's part of our nature to fear death.

There's also an argument as to why people are atheist/naturalist. Hey, I can act however I want in this life with no eternal consequences, and when I die I simply cease to exist. Sounds alright to me.

Still doesn't answer why you believe in a god or not.
