So I got new front tires like a year ago and they left my wheel lock in my cup holder instead of putting it back in the case in my trunk. Like an idiot, I didn't think about it and left it there for a few weeks, then threw it out thinking "I already have this."

Well I didn't realize it til today because I'm getting my rear wheels changed now and they had to cut to get my wheels off haha because I didn't have a wheel lock.

Do I need to buy a wheel lock? If so, am I fine to just get the $20-30 one off Amazon or whatever? It's a 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS with the 16" alloy wheels.

I suck with cars, (clearly), please help.

I'm not the best answer, but any wheellock that says it will fit should work no problem, wheather its $5 or $40 on amazon. I would just use the cheapest, maybe even check a local store see if they have one you can use.

They cut it off so they could take off my tires to put the new tires on. So now I guess I just don't have a wheel lock on my wheels, which I really don't think is a big deal.

My question really is, aside from the fact that it's supposed to deter people from stealing my rims/tires, is there any real functional reason for a wheel lock?

Ya. Apparently someone can just cut your wheels off if they want them?

jesus christ.

so cutting it off means that they used a grinder or something to work at the bolt until it splits in half, then shaved off whatever part of the bolt that may have gotten stripped.

You should only worry about a lock if you have really nice expensive rims, which I doubt since it's a 2012 hyundai, AND you live in such a neighborhood that crimes like that exist.
All a wheel lock does it create a special "socket" that fits into the nut. Tons of "universal" ones are out there for cheap, but do realize they usually share the same key. Why spend $100+ on rims that cost less than $50 to replace at the junkyard? All these rims probably have a plastic rimcover on it (That covers the bearingcap) so who cares what rim you originally get.
