Students at elite Brooklyn Tech HS petitioned to change the date of their senior prom next month because it conflicts with the Muslim observance of Ramadan — to no avail.
The prom will go on as planned, despite more than 240 people signing a Change.org petition, which argues that some of the school’s Muslim students would be unable to attend because of the scheduling.
Ramadan, an annual holy month that includes fasting during the day, begins next week. The prom is June 3.
Observant Muslims are scheduled to break their fast at 8:23 p.m. that night, well after the scheduled prom start time of 7 p.m.
“A change . . . even a week and a half earlier, would allow so many more people to partake,” the petition said. “If no action is taken, Senior Prom truly wouldn’t be open to every senior who wants to go.”
Brooklyn Tech officials said Monday they never received the petition and had no prior knowledge of it.
Taking the needs of Muslim students into account, though, the school won’t serve food at the prom prior to the breaking of the fast, officials said.
