What are some key things/tips I should know about before start playing?

Just play. Don't jade yourself with a new game by asking too many questions up front. Jump in and learn.

If this is your first time playing the game, just do it naturally, pick a race you identify youreself with (can read their lore on google if needed), and quest away through every zone they the quest line sends you.
Tips: Dont dungeon, dont play with friends, quest and try to learnt the game by yourself, better than the game mechanics is the progress of a new character so dont worry about trying to get to 110 too fast.

Netherweave Bags - should be cheap on Ah
Heirlooms - Peices of gear that are over powered that grant bonus %exp 5-10%

What heirlooms to buy first.

Your best investment would be to buy the intel cloth set which will allow you to play Mage,Druid,warlock,monk,paladin,priest classes that cant use it are rogue,hunter,deathnight,warrior,demon hunter.

If your going to play without buy gear/bags

When you get to a major city pick up the tabard and equip it so you gain rep with that faction this will net you a 16 slot for pretty cheap once your revered with them.

Save up all your gold for flying if your not using it sell it either ah or vendor tbh i always just vendor its not worth the time going back to a major city with an ah for an extra few gold.

these days your not going to learn much playing from lvl 1-110 since people are mostly over powered all the way to 100 now because they have full heirlooms that have been enchanted once you hit 110 your skills and talents will change because you will be looking into guides as to what your most optimal stats and ability are.

Atm its better to boost your character and get into the new content as fast as you can since you need to level up your artifact and your artifact knowledge asap if you even want to be considered for any decent raid group this expansion. (this is going to take a while on a fresh account)
