I think dumbbells provide greater ROM so are good for training stabilizer muscles but they dont feel as good as bench press does for me

I prefer db's cause they don't put as much stress on my wrist and shoulders as bench does (due to fixated hand position). Other than that I just feel they benefit me more overall when it comes to training chest.

I've always used dumbbells, helps to have a stand or box to place them on between sets, which might be your problem

Plaad has really small bench press (he can hide it under the guise of high rep dumbells tho)

Idk but my friend hit 405 on flat bb with the slanger today after working up from 135. We hit db only last week, previous week he was only able to hit 365 with the slingshot and hit 365x2 today before 405. So yes I think db work is essential

Side note: Feels good training with someone stronger as opposed to training with someone who's a bitch. Being the bitch gives gr8 motivation hehe
