it isn't so much as having elevated social skills, but being a yes-man and attending as many social functions as possible that involves upper management to be part of the inner circle, so to speak. happens a lot in startups and tech since their demographic makeup is younger than average, but more conventional corps tend to avoid that pitfall.

Also one good thing about where I work is they do not want yes men. They want push back, BUT you better be fucking right if you do.
