saw some sjw nerds talking about this on reddit so i decided to look it up

personally found it hard to read through this with a straight face as it just comes off as an ascended sssjw level of whining about life being unfair

does anyone here think this topic is important?

Quote
Intersectionality is a concept often used in critical theories to describe the ways in which oppressive institutions (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, xenophobia, classism, etc.) are interconnected and cannot be examined separately from one another. The concept first came from legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989 and is largely used in critical theories, especially Feminist theory, when discussing systematic oppression. When possible, credit Kimberlé Crenshaw for coining the term "intersectionality" and bringing the concept to wider attention.

Principles
In order to achieve anti-oppression aims, here are some things for geek groups to consider:

Aiming for diversity in general as well as gender-balance and women-friendliness in particular.

Just because you are female, or disabled, or a person of colour, or have a certain body type (overweight, underweight, average) does not mean that your experiences of sexism, ableism or racism or sizeism are an exact match for experiences of other kinds of oppression (or even exactly like sexism, ableism or racism for someone else, of course).

If someone suggests that you're doing something racist, ableist, etc., you will tend to react defensively. That's OK and natural! Take a deep breath, step away from the keyboard if you need to, think about the perspective of others in that situation , then apologise and figure out how not to do it again. If you continue to think the person misunderstood you or was wrong about your actions, don't get into an argument with them about it.

"Nothing about us without us": don't dictate to women, blind people, gay people or anyone else what they 'should' want from your geek community, software or roleplaying game, ask them and listen to the answers. Or better yet, trust them to lead the development of the product or the direction of the community and join initiatives they have already started...

One person or group may have multiple forms of oppression directed against them at the same time. This can complicate matters considerably.

Two people or groups with different forms of oppression directed against them may both have legitimate needs which come in conflict with each other. Picking a way to reconcile these needs is hard and tends to fall disproportionately hard on people who are already struggling.

It's just the reality that some people have shitty lives in more ways than one. I think too much of a stink is made about it, but I think that's mostly because sociologists are shitty scientists.

I first heard about the word from my friend when he was on his tinder phase two years ago. They were the same girls that would hook up with 3+ guys per week.

It isn't a dirty word in itself, but in order to believe in the concept, you have to be a vacuous person without your own system of morals and traditions yourself. Completely useless human beings in any worldly sense. A laughingstock.

The topic is a very revealing window on how our generation is not prepared to live.

It would be more mature to just own up to not knowing what you're talking about.

Intersectionality is critically important in understanding the complexity of social hierarchies and disparate and differing experiences and outcomes. It essentially is a framework first described by Kimberlé Crenshaw to denote the fact that no single person holds only 1 social identity, but that rather, every individual is a collection of social identities. As a result, it's not about having "more or less shitty lives", but rather exploring deeper than single-dimension categorizations that would otherwise lead us to conclude that there's no social/lived differences between the straight man and the gay man because they're both "just men".

It is, in essence, a term that the typical anti-SJW would likely embrace if they weren't just always anti-SJW. So often do people misunderstand concepts like "white privilege" and respond with "What about the white people who live in poverty?". To this, an intersectional framework absolutely explores both the social dynamics of whiteness, but also the experience of living in poverty, and rightfully notes that each social identity/placement is valid in their own way, but that they don't necessarily negate one another.

question for you, what if anything does the topic offer for helping disadvantaged groups overcome their obstacles in life despite their short comings?

Intersectionality isn't about developing some framework in order to help systematically disadvantaged people "overcome" anything, really. Intersectionality is merely a framework for us to better understand society on the individual, group and social system levels. Rather, it's a framework that helps to understand the current injustices and issues in our history/society and broadens and deepens our understanding so that we may make better decisions for equity when advocating and creating change.

To not operate through an intersectional lens is to be myopic and to paint complex social issues and people as simple, when invariably they are not.
