So i am looking into a mid level 5.1 speaker setup for my TV.

i know a bit about this stuff. but i am super confused on why an A/V receiver cost so damn much and is required if:

1) the subwoofer is active powered, so it gets its own power from itself and not the receiver
2) the cheaper A/V receivers under $500 often don't have pre amp outputs for speakers

So then why do we even need these receivers? I won't ever be using it to play things with a DVD or blu ray. And i won't ever need any bluetooth functions.

All i want to do is hook up a 5.1 speaker setup to my TV. but as far as i know you are required to spend at least $200 for a receiver.

So if someone can please explain whats the main point of an A/V receiver? and can you somehow hookup a 5.1 setup without buying one for $200? and if you can do a workaround, any reason why its a bad idea?

Thanks!

Did you ever try to plug speaker wires directly into your TV outputs?

Then you know one of the reasons why you need a receiver

Those without amp can be used to connect bazillion devices to tv without enough ports I guess

What kind of outputs does your TV have? Probably optical and stereo? Most of the time optical will be stereo only too. If by some miracle you have analog outputs for all 6 channels thne you can get powered speakers.

If not dvd/bluray, what are you going to use it with? Because 5.1 is only good for movies, and if you want 5.1 you want a good quality, not cheapest $200 crap.

You don't need to spend a ton.

350 will get you a decent dennon or marantz

There is no "work around "....

You either want good sound, or you dont

true, but it seems shitty to have to spend a couple hundred just to be able to plug in speakers. extra connections dont normally cost alot for other items

Knowing you I think you want to connect 5.1 computer speakers to your tv? You dont need receiver for that. But like said already, your tv most likely only outputs stereo any way. What outputs your tv has?

cpmputer 5.1s wont even work for a TV, correct me if I am wrong but the vast majority of computer 5.1 systems use 3 1/8th" jacks to achieve 5.1 which requires a motherboard with enough outputs or a sound card

Your TV only outputs in stereo unless you have an HDMI or an OPTICAL

you could get them hooked up with some god-awful splitter setup but you won't get surround, it will just be cloned stereo
