I want one for my closet, when purchasing one- should I be looking for the interior (where the door sits inside) or the exterior measurements

My door is 31" which means the outside mount is about 35" with the framing trim.

you're looking for measurements or type of bar?

i would stick to exterior, interior might put damage to the door frame.

Do the exterior ones that are everywhere in commercials lol.

That's what I started out with, still have it and it's been 4 years since it was bought and two years since it was used
