Finally got around to watching it today.
I really enjoyed learning about the history of the CBs as framed through the Wishing Star bear. Truly an artful telling, like the anime equivalent to reading Chaucer.
True Heart bear, who is unique to this story, served as a truly compelling protagonist as he led his comrades against the evil Dark Heart. I actually found his character much more identifiable than other heralded protagonists like Vash (from Trigun), Spike (from Cowboy Bebop), or Luffy (from One Piece)
I was relieved to find out that they vanquished Dark Heart without harming the demon's earthly vessel (I couldn't remember if the child had to be slaughtered or not from memory). The best part was when the cadre of bears broke the 4th wall, imploring the audience for their help in exorcising Dark Heart from his earthly vessel. It reminded me of the marvelous ending to Eathbound, when you defeat Giygas by prayer. While breaking the 4th wall is taboo in most instances, I think it worked well here. It allowed me to feel like I was a part of the story, working with the care bears to triumph over evil.
I'm looking forward to watching the following movie in the series, The Care Bears Movie III: Adventure in Wonderland. I'm hoping this anime is as good as #2. I strongly recommend #2 to those who have not seen it. It's up there with Death Note in terms of quality.
