What will really manifest first is the 2018 split ticket voters. Trump got elected because of a lot of Bernie supporters going over to Trump. He was less popular with the evangelical / neocon right and more popular with the anti-establishment moderates and left. Over here in MN the story was Rick Nolan winning as a democrat 50-49 in a district that went 54-39 for trump; lots of people voted for Trump for president and democrats for lower offices. These split tickets came from people who were previously democrats.
Democrats won't be able to hold onto all of these for lower offices in 2018. Many will become full republican voters. They're being actively alienated by the democrats after all. Some will full democrat straight line tickets, but some will flip.

So democrats will have a tenuous hold on their own voters and have to try to win back the anti-establishment of their own base while trying to also get the moderates in the middle, pulling in two directions at once, and all the meanwhile the field will be stacked against them defending 5x the competitive senate seats as republicans, in states that went double digit to Trump. Its a strong bet that republicans will pick up 2-4 senate seats, but the 8 for supermajority would be the blowout scenario
