What are some main differences / use case examples for when to use and not use .JPG and .PNG ?

I know .JPG is "less data heavy", while .PNG is "heavier data", but can scale as an SVG or something?

Some examples would be nice, specifically for when pushing to a production environment (AWS), and enterprise apps.

PNG's main strength is for transparency. GIF offers transparency as well, but it pixelates the edge of transparent images, especially drop shadows. PNG has the ability to sustain soft edges/gradients on transparent images, but it has a larger file size. There are websites like tinypng.com that remove a lot of back-end data and maintain quality if you ever need a smaller file size PNG. Also, PNG is only used for web, because you can't have a CMYK png for print.

JPG's main strength is having a good balance of resolution and file size. It's used for both print and web, although TIF is preferred for print to maintain the highest quality image.

JPG produces the easiest route for d2jsp sigs, but GIF is for animation and/or transparency, and PNG is for transparency with soft edges, but you have to reduce the file size with third-party programs to meet d2jsp regulations.

To clarify this troll comment for the OP, GIF is for animation. I think you might be confused by imgur thinks with altered URLs that show the JPG extension.

To clarify this troll comment for the OP, that's literally its main, distinguishing feature. You might not have a checkbox checked.
