So I took my computer apart because it was overheating. The cooler wasn't fully attached to the motherboard and so I fixed that but when I put everything back together and tried turning it on, it doesn't work. It turns on and then off in about a second by itself. Then it repeats the process over and over until I turn the power supply off. Anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this? I built this computer from scratch years ago so maybe I didn't rewire it correctly, idk.

!st guess...

The CPU cooler is not attached properly. Or, the thermal compound is missing or incorrectly applied.

Other things to check...

1. Are the 24 pin and the 4 or 8 pin motherboard connectors plugged in and fully seated?
2. Is the connector for the CPU cooler fan plugged into the CPU_Fan1 or CPU_Opt headers on the motherboard?
3. Are the RAM and vid card fully seated and for the RAM...in the proper slots.

Nothing is plugged into cpu fan 1 so I'll check that out. I'm gonna buy more thermal paste bc I think I accidentally touched it when putting it back on the motherboard. Ty I will check these out

Nvm It is plugged into cpu fan. I think it's my paste. I didn't know that would cause my computer to act this way lol

There is also a short in one of the wires for the heatsink. Would that cause it not to work? That's why it was overheating in the first place. The fan stopped working until I messed with the wires and it wasn't properly secured

If the fans mount then it should not over heat even if paste is badly applied. least not as fast as your claiming.
I'd bet its a short/loose connection/dead part. Start with reconnecting "everything".

post some well-lit pictures of the build, some here may be able to identify an issue right away if it's visible.

I haven't tried anything in like a week since I think I fried my motherboard. I'm gonna mess around with it a bit today

This used to happen to me when I was using the STOCK cooler on my LGA 775 board. If you've been having this overheat problem since you built the computer than you might just have to upgrade your cooler. Same thing happened to me, it would turn on, and to protect the CPU, when it would overheat (3-7 seconds after booting), the computer would shut off. Then I bought a hyper 212 evo and problem solved.

The stock coolers are made for the TDP. Obviously there is an specific issues.
