when you buy you're ticket you agree to the terms of service together with following this law, and I'm God dam sure united or any other company has the right to remove any passenger for a number reasons from the plain before take off for security and health and safety purposes.
if the passenger refuses to take over the offer and refuse to leave the plane then united calls the authorities and it's not in United's hands what happens from there.
he broke his lip? then don't resist the authorities that are doing their job under the law.. I'm sure his lip was due to his resistance, no one would punch his head on purpose unless necessary, especially in this case.
I'm actually VERY surprised that he wasn't arrested and blacklisted, especially in the US, that would be the right thing to do.
