Provided that women have the right to decide whether or not they want to withdraw from parenthood through an abortion, the young folks in the Liberal party of Sweden had proposed that men ought to have the rights to renounce the duties and rights of parenthood as a woman does through an abortion.

In the context of gender equality when it comes to parenthood this makes perfect sense as only women have the right to withdraw from parenthood at the moment, and this would grant men the same rights.

Curious where our resident pardians stand on the matter of granting equal rights to men/women with regards to parenthood ?

Men should have the same right as women to decide not be parents, according to a controversial new proposal from the Liberal Party's youth wing in western Sweden (LUF Väst).
Men who don't want to become fathers should be permitted to have a “legal abortion” up to the 18th week of a woman's pregnancy, say the young liberals.

The cut-off date coincides with the last week in which a woman can terminate a pregnancy in Sweden.

“This means a man would renounce the duties and rights of parenthood,” LUF Väst chairman Marcus Nilsen told The Local.

By signing up for a “legal abortion” then, a man would not have to pay maintenance for his child, but neither would he have any right to meet the child.

The group believes “legal abortion” for men would promote equality between the sexes in the early stages of a pregnancy, giving men a chance to opt out. Women would also benefit if they knew from the get-go whether a man was willing to commit to parenthood, the young liberals say.

Depends on the welfare available to single mothers. In a nation like America where there isn't much available to women in such a position, it would be bad. Equality is not always the highest goal to strive for.

Seems perfectly logical and fair. The response to it will serve as a gauge for how dedicated the swedes are to a progressive egalitarian society versus being dominated by social justice and PC culture.

I disagree with this. Don't have sex if you don't want to raise a child.

ECHR article 8 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_8_of_the_European_Convention_on_Human_Rights) probs trumps that.

anyways - what's with the hostility towards children? Or is it more about inability/unwillingness to handle any responsibilities at all?

The state pays for child support if the other parent is uncapable or unavailable to do so.

So you disagree with women's right to opt out of parenthood?
