Syria is by no means an imminent threat to the US, there were no efforts made by the Syrian government to conduct any kind of attack on the US.. and apparently Russia was consulted before this recent US strike in Syria.. so we can consult Russia, but we cannot consult our own congress... makes a lot of sense
but fuck it, we already set the precedent that the president can ignore our national laws back when we allowed Obama to get involved in Libya without congressional approval. The UK and France conducted a vote in their parliament, while the US left the decision to a single man. That's who we are now, we allow our presidents to ignore our own laws limiting their executive powers on military actions.
well, tonights airstrikes were clearly intended as a surprise attack. military action that is discussed to death in congress before being carried out can obviously never be a surprise attack since the whole world would know their intentions before they get congressional approval.
so yes, congress must absolutely be asked for approval before a large-scale military operation in a foreign country is started. but shooting a bunch of cruise missiles in a deliberate surprise attack? dont be silly...
