I've left my dog for a couple days with plenty of food and water....but dogs are real sociable unlike cats and want attention and affection.

When I came to visit my relative, her pug was very friendly but would start barking when she sensed we were about to leave. Leaving a dog half a day is fine.

8-10 hours...... but a puppy much less, as they need to go potty much more often

this.

When we got our dog, one of us came home at lunch each day to let her out. Even a small dog is a big time commitment. They'll need walks twice a days a puppies, and at least one good one a day for most of their lives.

As Emerican said, you can count on leaving a well trained, housebroken adult dog for a normal workday no problem, but it's not going to work out well (for you or the dog) to leave a new puppy alone for that long.

I was lucky when I got my dog as a puppy, the job I was at allowed me to bring him to work. So it really helped with potty training and stuff. So first like 3 months I could take him out when needed

Not everyone is that lucky and you will have to go home middle of the day to let said puppy out

Just depends on the dog honestly, and its temperament.

Eh, I don't really agree. You're right in the sense that you can leave different dogs for different lengths of time with regard to your stuff, a high string dog will probably pee on your carpet and rip up your couch before a mellow, relaxed one of course. However, no dog is going to enjoy being left alone for too long, whether it destroys your house or not, so if op doesn't think they can be home enough, he should wait to get a dog until they can give it the attention it needs, and not just try to get a dog that won't eat their things when it's frustrated from being left home too long.

If you can afford it, day care for dogs is also an option.
