Poor is spot on with connections imo, buisness/social networking plays a large role in success.

Luck is obviously a strong factor as in you can be average in all other category and succeed with good luck.

Initial capital is good on it own but becomes much better when combined with another factor (luck, education, hard work, ability).

Cheating and profiting at the expense of others of course exists and I'm sure works if you don't get caught.

I thought they meant inherent connections due to family and stuff
Not ones formed yourself. Because once you start gaining success you'll just naturally get connections as a result anyway.

Of course everything on the list works, but I think it's about what is most often the best.

my secret to success was a well plotted out classic rusher strategy, which when optimized let me do 7 leecher runs in 20 minutes on day 1 of a new ladder. Opportunity and monopoly of the market let me create maximum profit with minimum effort

yeah the problem is that poor people don't have enough willpower to conjure themselves some million-dollar trust fund and friendships with the most powerful people in town.

The biggest factor in life is luck. Being born in North America or Europe or South Korea/Japan/Australia automatically means you won the life lottery from the start.

Then the next phase of luck happens with who your parents are. What color is your skin. How attractive you are and can go on and on.

So if you get lucky , and you work hard as you can, you'll probably get somewhere.

If you get the short straw , I guess you better work harder. In general it's kind of foolish to give up because of luck but to act like it is not the biggest determinant of your position in life is delusional. So many things happen in life that are outside of your control. Just like a hand of texas hold em poker, you could have played it perfectly but some jackass could beat you on the river.

Of course successful people are going to say the only thing that matters is hard work and ability and poor people are going to say the only thing that matters is luck. Do you think a significant group of people are actually able to self-reflect enough to figure out the true reasons for their successes or failures? The only research I've ever seen on this said the only variable that showed any sort of correlation for start-ups was initial capital. It'd probably be pretty hard to test for luck. And anecdotally, every single successful small business owner I've gotten close enough to to actually learn their story had a large amount of start-up capital, usually through familial connections. And the big reason I've had any success is through connections I have (although I made those connections through work).

But like, if you want to belong to the cult of capital and believe that it's all about hard work and ability, then go for it.
