if i'm having trouble getting past a certain number of reps is it a good idea to try heavier weights at lower reps to get past it?

You have a number options, all will work.

Lower the weight, do more reps. This will increase your endurance and you won't gas out as quick when you return to your original weight

Increase the weight, do less reps. This will increase your strength, and you will be able to move the lower weights easier

Keep the weight the same, do slightly less reps, but do more sets. This will increase the volume of your workouts and increase strength over time

Of course you can get more sleep, eat better, eat more, get better at form, increase the frequency of the movement, fap to tranny porn for increase test,
