I did this some time ago, on a linux Ubuntu 15+, and it worked

Open terminal: install wine
" sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install wine1.7 winetricks"

Run winecfg
Application tab->check default settings for windows XP
now, emulate a virtual desktop (best imo is ike 1024x768)

Login to battlenet or create account if u don`t have
Register your cd keys(diablo2 original+LOD) in the Classic games menu
Download the installers etc..

Hope I could help you a bit, due to the fact that I`ve done this 2 times my whole life :|....I am just an amateur of linux...

It works pretty much out-of-the-box, no trickery needed. What is the problem?

Well that's why I didn't want to bother posting all my questions Herr. More so looking to have a 1 on 1 convo about some specifics.

I already have d2 up and running just fine on my Linux, I'm more interested in getting it to run on a vm. I did find a pretty handy step by step guide, but would still like to find someone who knows a good deal about Linux Ubuntu. Sorry for the confusion.

Edit: Also willing to pay fg for the help I'm looking for :). At least 100+ fg.
