So ya... I rear ended someone today. Pretty low speed but enough to do a good bit of damage to my car (theirs barely noticed).

So I have a few questions:

1. What are the chances it gets totaled? Its a 2007 with 130,000 miles on it. Bumper, grille, radiator, radiator support, one headlight, one fender, and the hood are all damaged. Maybe more, I couldnt get the hood open to really look it over.

2. If it does get totaled, what would I get paid, blue book? And would I have a chance to swap out some of my mods with OEM parts before hand?

3. How much do you guys think my insurance will go up? I pay about $115/month (geico) for both my Jeep and Mustang combined, no accidents or tickets on my record previously.

4. Do points on your license affect insurance costs or is it just the accident that will? I got a citation for careless driving which will add points. I might can get the dropped in court but if it wont matter for insurance reasons I may not even bother.

5. If it is repaired and there is no frame damage or anything, what will that do to the value of my car?

Any pedestrians involved? Sorry, couldn't help myself.

It really depends on the adjuster to be honest. I've had it go both ways.

Recently one of my goons slammed into a highway divider at 60mph and completely fucked everything from the cab forward. Truck was 3 years old with ~130k miles. They fixed it. God only knows how much this shit cost them to fix. way more than the truck was worth.

About two years ago, someone side swipped one of my duallys and damaging the bedside, and breaking the outside rim, as well as breaking the ubolt on the leaf springs dropping the axle. Truck was 2 years old, less than 50k miles and they totaled it... This was a less than 5k repair on a 40k truck.

1. Chances are...It's pretty close...That's probably 8 grand in repairs, based on your description. Did the airbag deploy? Or light come on? That's usually an immediate total.

2. You get paid assessed value. The adjuster comes out, assesses the damage, and gives you the verdict. If it's totalled, and your mods are worth more to you, you can buy the car back and part it out.

3. Only your insurance agent can give you this.. it will definitely go up. Nothing you can do about that really.

4. In most states, yes, points directly affect insurance rates. Even if you got no points, you were in a reported accident, insurance knows...They never forget.

5. Carfax and any other vehicle report will show an accident, so yes, this will negatively affect resale.

I wasnt touching my phone, but thanks for the pro advice.

I just got a call from the estimator and they are totaling it. Kinda imagine im about to get screwed on the value too. I was planning to sell it for at least $8000, hopefully they can come close to that at least.

Might finally be able to get a C7 now at least

unless there is ice, how do you rear end someone if you're not on your phone.

Ask the woman who side swipped my PARKED truck going 30mph in the parking lot. She didn't even have a fucking phone with her. She had to come into the building to use ours.

Honestly, I don't really know how I managed to. I was just thinking through what I needed to do that evening and I checked my side mirror to see if I could change lanes and when I looked back everyone was nearly stopped. Not all distractions are physical I suppose. I feel pretty dumb about it. Fir a split second I thought I was going to be able to stop in time. I was going a lot slower that you would think I was when you see the damage.

And it is totaled. I think it It would have been a smaller car and hit center of my bumper it wouldnt have been totaled, but I hit their trailer hitch dead on the core support area.
On the bright side, I had the car listed for sale and had already decided I would probably accept $8000 for it. Insurance is giving me $7980 (with the deductible already taken off) plus they let me take my CAI, head unit, and a few exterior parts off.
