You improve a lot faster playing at a higher skilled opponent I feel.

There is none, you'll just be a higher rank but play like a silver 3. Then every team you get paired with in the future is going to hate you.

Some people really do benefit from getting boosted though.

This is correct. I am not advocating boosting but playing with better people will increase your own skill level much faster than grinding through the ranks. It is an expedited way of learning some of tactics that higher rank players use.
