you put skill gem in a socket and you get the skill it provides.

If the socket has links to other sockets you can put support gems that modify the skill.
Not all support gems work with all gems. Each skill gem has tags like projectile, physical, spell for example. This skill could be supported by any support gems which have one of these tags.

For example. Cleave linked with faster attacks and melee physical damage support gems would work. Linking it with Greater Multiple Projectiles would not work as GMP only affects projectiles
Sometimes the gems can be a bit confusing. For example Ethereal knives is a physical projectile SPELL. There is a support gem called physical projectile attack damage. This how ever wont with Ethereal knives as its considered a spell and the support gem only affects ATTACKS.

A good thing to note is the difference in wording of these gems. Especially big is the difference between increased damage % multipliers and MORE damage % multipliers.
MORE dmg % is better damage wise and should be preferred over increased damage.

increased damage vs more dmg
attack damage vs spell damage
aoe damage vs projectile damage
physical damage vs elemental damage
elemental damage vs elemental damage with weapons.

are mostly the ones that can cause missunderstandings
