That's an interesting take on history. Although i'm all for US and Russia being friendsi'm pretty sure we dropped the nukes because to comb thru Japan with ground forces would of resulted in an exponential number of casualties considering even the civilians would of fought us with their bushido mindset.
If we didn't get a foothold in western Europe halting the spread of Communism i suspect much of western Europe would of been Red. I mean look at east Germany and how long it took them to come around, can you imagine if the rest of Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy were also red?
This ignores the reality the main thing that kept Japan from surrendering was the fact the Soviet Union had not begun an invasion into Japan and the US demanding unconditional surrender.
Japan was more fearful of Soviet invasion more than anything else. Also many top military officials of the time were against it.
Also Japan was hesitant to surrender because of the fact they feared the Emperor would not be allowed to remain. The US wanted unconditional surrender, if they had just promised the Emperor would be allowed to remain, forcing Japan to surrender would have been much easier rather than relying on Nukes or the threat of Soviet invasion.
Eisenhower/MacArthur were both against the bomb and many other people involved in leadership in the Navy/Air Force and military.
