Trump wasn't hiding his return because of Russia connections... he was embarrassed that he paid a higher rate than a socialist. His career is over.
That's similar to one of the hypotheses I had, that he just didn't want people to know that he wasn't as wealthy as he claimed. If the "Trump leaked it himself" hypothesis is true (which I know of no evidence that it is) then maybe he would have leaked the year with either or both of 1) the highest earnings or 2) the most taxes paid (while also clean of any wrongdoing).
I still think by far the most likely explanation is Russia-related.
