TBH I see merit in having a tour done a lil bit differently like sb suggested:

Randomize teams.

Instead of teams, single players sign-up and then get paired up with sb at random. 5fg joining fee, no scaremongering - you find out whom your teammate is right before the tour starts after everybody joined = more ppl willing to join.

In case of uneven number of players - last player doesn't play - encourages early sign-ups.

Nobody can complain about teams/expensive vs cheap teams etc.

That being said, even ham/ama is beatable and we had pretty even matches. Given that nec/assa is a pretty strong team by itself doesn't change the fact our chars were nowhere near the lvl of fg paid, but still we managed somehow.

sure why not.. whatever makes people signup. for me its about having fun. dont care too much about winning. my pot donation stays whether tourney type gets changed or stays.
