That's how debates work. You attack the subject matter and the arguments.
There's a difference between attacking the person making the argument and attacking the argument itself.
If you can't handle someone being critical of your opinion, then you shouldn't be in a discussion.
There is less of a difference here in PaRD than there should be. But by and large there are a lot of people who react very poorly to having their views challenged. I like to think that most higher education institutions in the West are aimed at helping that. Unfortunately not everyone is educated. Some, like me, were aware of it even before reaching higher education. Some will just never get it.
