As the descendant of a family who controlled Cape Fear for decades and who farmed many thousands of acres of farmland starting in the early 1700s, and who built their wealth and land holdings on the backs of slaves, I certainly feel that there is a debt owed by my family to those who we exploited and then "repaid" through supporting policies that lead to the ghettoization of nearly an entire race.
Anyone who has roots from England, Scotland, and later the U.K. beginning in the 1600s in this country likely owes a similar debt. These are the men and women who were considered "white" people at that time. Germans, Irish, Italians, and all other ethnic and national groups of caucasians who came to this country centuries later bear no responsibility for the sins of my forbears. It is unfortunate that because we use the word "white" in a manner not relevant to colonial and slave times in this land, millions of white people feel like they need to embrace some sort of shared cultural guilt. I disagree with that notion. It was my family's fault, not yours.
