The concept behind your idea is good, but i don't think it's really needed.
If you see a topic that you haven't posted in (by the color of the envelope icon), you go in then post if you want. You then have the choice to track or not the said topic.

Having the topic tracked and the fact that you posted in it (i.e.) before, this is kind of the same result of your "participated icon" concept.
Not a fan of adding something else beside the topic titles either.

Nah.....i dont need to be reminded of the thousands of posts i've made......all important posts i keep in my Tracked Topics.....too much visual crap gets annoying after a while.......Posts are only 3 pages long its not hard to scroll through......and I don't know what could possibly be so important about a jSP post that you'd want to go back and read your own posts.

I think people are misunderstanding this suggestion, and also missed the part where I mentioned this feature could be turned on/off. Oh well, can close this now.

A little green icon like that would make my life a lot easier.

I kind of agreed with you, but the whole envelope thing has always confused me.
Hence, a green icon for topics I've read/posted in would be nice.
