Would WoW be a successful game right now if not for the early expansions getting people hooked?

Theres likely hundreds of thousands of people who play private vanilla servers, so I would say yes. Even vanilla wow has more content than most mmorpg's on the web right now.

How does that lead you to answering the question with a 'yes'? I'm not seeing your logic here.

MoP, 2nd patch i believe

few weeks after launch at friends account. I was 15 back in time. Idea about paying monthly to play video game sounded absurb for person who gets like 20 euros week to spend.

Well 3 months and I had my own account. been active since, with few breaks. And after I learned how to make some money with little effort I can pay for next 40 years game time with current price.

So basically, the conclusion we can draw from this is that:

The reason that most players are playing Legion is because vanilla was great. Any mediocre expansion Blizzard puts out is going to get players BECAUSE the previous content was what got them hooked.

Is there a counterargument to this conclusion somewhere out there?

Well I would like to add that, I really dislike current world of warcraft: Legion. its not my type of game anymore at all. I still keep making gold for future / for some extra bucks i get out of it.

I do Raid 1-2 times a week in world top 50 guild and do 1-2 mythic dungeon per week. its all I do in game right now. Im not hyped anymore new content past years. But I do clear them.

rest of the times I play other games, most likely much much older than world of warcraft maybe I like nostalgia, but old games has value of items / status on players etc. World of Warcraft is missing all that what makes MMORPG.
