just wanted to know the differences between Classic and ladder ?
i know that is a stupid question but i really dont know,

diablo 2 classic - basic game
diablo 2 lod - expansion

ladder is active - you can see your char there if you play hard
non ladder - ladder function is gone

Both are on same realm, but cannot join each others games until a new ladder starts. Then your chars become non-ladder.
Most activity is mostly on ladder.

Classic / Expansion can be chosen each time you make a new character.
Classic is more like the original game (back in 2000), with no act 5, no druid, no assassin (and many other differences).
Expansion shows new features (act5, new characters, etc).
Classic chars cannot join Expansion games, Expansion chars cannot join Classic games.

Ladder / Non-Ladder is a mode that you can also choose when creating a new character.
Ladder lasts some months (or years), then all Ladder characters are converted to Non-Ladder at a given date, when another Ladder begins.
Ladder chars cannot join Non-Ladder games, Non-Ladder chars cannot join Ladder games.
There are very few differences between Ladder and Non-Ladder (the most noticable : some runewords cannot be made in Non-ladder games, monsters are stronger in Ladder games).

To sum up, there are :
- Classic Ladder chars
- Classic Non-Ladder chars
- Expansion Ladder chars
- Expansion Non-Ladder chars

You can also consider being Softcore or Hardcore, and Europe or West-America or East-America or Asia.

ladder allways last around 6 months on diablo 2,
on non-ladder people have items from older versions of this game, with stats that can NOT drop anymore, like bugbelt, or socket uniquen-items on classic.
