Now it's a matter of scaling reactions, and getting the efficiency to the point where it doesn't use more energy than it creates.

Pretty exciting news TBH, as commercially-viable fusion could eliminate our need for fossil fuels for the energy grid (It will take a lot longer to get to the point where a Back To The Future-style "Mr Fusion" would eliminate the need for fossil fuels in the transportation sector).

Those are two pretty big hurdles.

Oh, definitely. But I think being able to maintain reaction and field stability is the key thing, simply due to the insane temperatures required for the reaction to take place. That in and of itself is a huge hurdle - one which has been successfully cleared. On to the next one. :)

This is ridiculously cool. It seems highly likely that we'll see commercially viable fusion available within our lifetimes. This may be the answer to the inevitable oil crisis we will face.

I certainly hope it helps with the oil crisis as it is getting worse every year we don't spend more on alternative energy research and deployment.

Lets see how long it takes to resolve that efficiency problem (if ever).
