Ive read a little and seen a few episodes and such on this subject, it's really surprising to me that with modern equipment they still havent cracked this mystery.
it seems that the water table on the island is incredibly high. so in essence when you get down to the depth things are burried at the whole dig site will fill with water. Still this season the methods of drilling have increased ten fold.
another thing to consider is that previously in the 60s-70s someone brought in digging equipment and completely leveled off a portion of the island potentially destroying any clues left behind. he graded off a clear 2-3 feet with a bulldozer. this was seen as a massive tragedy by those searching for clues. so in the first 3 seasons they tried to work with existing holes, which are 50+ years old. Now that they've cleared the area for any remaining clues they leveled off the whole area and are starting a whole new dig with the best equipment ever used on the island ever.
and from the previews it looks like they do indeed find manmade beams 100+ feet under ground, whether there's treasure there or not we'll see. they're also draining a swamp on the island that most historians agree appears man made, which has never been done.
