What's the traditional meaning of it?
libertarianism was made a semi mainstream ideology by european philosophers of the 18th and 19th centuries. it never really took off here but the yanks seemed to really like it, i think the founding fathers were heavily influenced by it with their constant references to all things liberty.
most importantly though, the philosophers that advocated libertarianism were not laissez faire capitalists. that's a relatively new phenomenon.
