Because the old system was put into place based on how many people in each state could read/were educated...pretty sure almost everyone in every state can read now

The electoral college was formed to compensate for the fact that many Americans could never hear a presidential candidate speak or learn about their policy positions. In the age of the internet and television it is outdated.

That's far from the only reason for the electoral college, and it's even more important in the modern day to prevent massive population centers from completely dominating elections.

The Republican Party will become the Libertarian Party. It's the only way for their survival.

The libertarian party's own beliefs would result in more than the red states becoming blue states.

Not sure how that helps them survive.

No. The electoral college is essentially a state level popular vote. Then each state votes at a federal level in place of its citizens via its electors. It doesn't in anyway prevent massive population centers from dominating elections. California and Texas dominate in # of electoral votes.

Yes, but because California and Texas are fairly foregone conclusions, they get less focus than smaller swing states, so you end up with people caring about and campaigning in North Carolina, f'rinstance. Like, fucking duh.
