When I want Blue Crab, I just tie a few old chicken legs to twine attached to paint sticks and push the sticks into the sand. Get like 20-30 on average while fishing. Northeast Florida, in-between J-ville and St. Augustine.

In Maryland on the bay we would tie chicken to string, the other end to the dock, then throw em in. Check on em later to see what we found.

Same thing for jersey. Chicken on string with a net. I have traps but rarely use them. Same concept for the traps though, chicken tied in the middle.
