I learned much about Finnish history.

Seriously though, neglecting African, American and Asian history seems to have caused a lot of misconceptions.

lol'd

Zinn goes pretty far, for sure, but Loewen isn't half bad. I'm not saying he's unbiased, but he's pretty open with his biases, I find. :P

It's actually pretty hilarious that that was your first suggestion. Hey kids fresh outta high school, leave the world history for another day, you need to be set straight on Columbus and Native American genocide.

I'm not opposed to a critical history of the United States, but let's wait until kids are old enough to have some perspective.

Vouch.

Its sensationalist.

The only thing it will teach you to do is try to be ashamed of your heritage.

That feel when you're so bad at this that you reply to a part about two books and say 'it's sensationalist.'

Also, do you have a statistical argument to back up this claim?

It really is important shit tho. It'd be dumb to jump into new stuff while carrying so much baggage.

I learned that the Great Depression was exacerbated because Hoover 'did nothing' and FDR was pro-active in ending it. Even though his policies did nothing but increase the duration of the depression. We literally had a sharper decline in the U.S. Economy in 1922 and we rebounded in less than a year. It was so quick of a recovery that you don't even learn of it in history class.

I literally learned a bunch of half assed, 'makes a good story', history. We all did.

The civil war was about slavery. derp.

The revolutionary war was about liberty. DERP.

lol, the civil war wasn't about slavery, it was about states' rights (to own slaves) and economic inequality (because the south depended on slave labor economically).

It is important to know your history. American history, American Constitution, English, Western Philosophy, Western Science. The Liberal Arts....the knowledge free people must know to participate fully in the body politic.

Nope, you can do very well and be happy with a limited basic history knowledge. You think everyone should be politicized but that's your problem, i may think that everyone should care intensively about environnement or spirituality, etc... lot people think there specific knowledge is so much important, that's just wrong and selfish.
