Most professional athletes don't need security for their daily routine trips to the store, malls, etc...
Sometimes teams will assign security if a valuable franchise player or such is going out a lot to night clubs and shit by themselves. This happened to Durant in his first couple of years (i know one of the guys who had a chance to work with Durant as security for about a year), the Thunder provided the security because he was out on his own at night with just friends. When you invest huge money into a guy, you want to make sure he's not getting hurt/arrested off the court...
Sixers assigned security to Okafor after his incidents.
Texas Rangers had to do this with Josh Hamilton before they traded him to the angels to try and keep him from getting trouble since he was getting in trouble with alcohol and drugs. Some athletes have no self control so they need a baby sitter to keep them in check
