It used to matter for certain multipliers in D3 Vanilla but from what I remember they changed the way it works.
Physical (non elemental) damage rolls on weapons used to be best because they were able to be effected by all %fire/poison/etc... damage mods on gear.
But once those damage multipliers stopped ranging from 4-6% an went up to 15-20% they changed the system
