I've been reading about professions and mesmer seems like a trickster/mage which seems like a lot of fun.
Any problems with playing mesmer as my first character to play the game?

mesmer is slow and a little boring to level, but at max level its pretty good.

can just try it out and if you dont like it early just play something easy like warrior.

I was thinking my plan b to be elementalist? Read that it's really versatile. Is the elementalist like any other mage in mmorpgs with rotations and shizzle?

yeah lots of different skills and takes a little practice to learn what they all do

Mesmer changes its skills with weapons...
the 2nd weapon seems pretty good but I can feel the slowness in killing monsters already xD

all classes change their skills based on what weapon they have equipped.

for leveling mesmer i would recommend sword/focus and greatsword. sword has a decent auto attack and skill 2 (focus skill 4 gives swiftness), and greatsword has a good single target ranged auto attack and high damage burst skills. staff is okay, and wand is really slow.
but of course always test out every weapon and find ones you like best.

I enjoyed the early game staff because it created clones that would many times draw aggro from the monster I'm attacking.
I didn't really like the sword because of the long cooldown of the <creating clone/swapping place with clone> skill.
