It would be a lot better I think if the messages were grouped together by user. Gmail is an example. Or if it was more like a scrolling chat, that would also be cool. It's just frustrating trying to answer multiple messages quickly.

Do you mean something like this: Possibility To Sort The Inbox ?

Also remember to add a poll to your site suggestions, otherwise they will get closed. You can read more about creating a site suggestion here: How To Post A Site Suggestion

But more like Gmail how messages are automatically sorted by conversation, so you can see all previous messages and respond to that user in one place.

I don't want to have to click on multiple messages to see all the different emails from one user.

the quote system already groups private messages, if you go back and forth with a user via pm all communications are in the most recent pm (grouped). i suppose the only difference would be that your inbox has the conversation history broken up into separate entries. i think a grouped system like gmail would be confusing to inbox size. technically you could have "1 message" (inbox listing) that carries a weight of 50 messages because it is a grouped back and forth pm. while i like gmails style (in some cases i absolutely hate it -- they group emails of a similar title but different message thread, extremely annoying!) i dont think it will translate well into a forum pm system. i voted no.
