PlayStation wasn't really profitable at all last gen. They admitted to selling the console at a fairly steep loss per unit once they did drop the price and started actually selling units. Having said that PlayStation is about the only viable profit maker in Sony's portfolio especially with the PS4. Microsoft is kind of the opposite. They made a killing last gen but this gen they are not doing that great. They are still making a profit off the Xbox but unlike Sony,Microsoft has a shit ton of products that make a shit ton of money,so they can afford to not do so well with the Xbox. Obviously that is not their mindset and they of course want to make as much money as possible so they do want to catch up. But without Xbox Microsoft is still one of the biggest companies in the world. Without playstation Sony is borderline bankrupt.

The problem with Xbox now is even last gen and this gen they only ever really marketed in the States. Its like they don't care about the rest of the world which obviously accounts to a lot of sales. And in that aspect the Xbox and playstation are virtually neck and neck in North America,its Europe and Japan that the playstation kills the Xbox

microsoft's xbox brand is also notorious for some high money deals that didnt pan out, even in the 360 era
