It's not the end all be all, but it does help categorize types. People are complex and nuanced, nobody fits perfectly into a box. It's fun to take them every now and then like the political ones. I'm not sure how relevant they are to psychologists and social workers, perhaps one of them can chime in here.

The MBTI is more along the lines of pop-psychology and isn't really used in mainstream psychology. It's mostly used in business settings to show that the work environment is full of "diversity" in an attempt to minimize conflict by understanding that "everyone is different". In that regard, it's still good that that gets across, and lets people know that the people around them have different learning/processing styles and that not everyone interacts the same way.
Personally, as far as personality tests go, I prefer the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and it's the one used more in psychological/clinical settings.
