he didn't know, it was all a gamble.
people see it as some sort of incurable curse it seems, but he seems to be more of the logical science type who seen it like any other disease/virus and that it could be combated as such.
so he hastly put into motion various methods to prevent it from spreading.
such as bolting that shit to his arm and isolating it while also putting a lot of strain on his body (most notably the neck region) to make the disease/virus stop it's progression.
i'll go ahead and assume that he still has the disease, but the bolted arm thing keeps it at bay somewhat.
and that he'll likely have to keep it in check and fight it off again if it decides to push past it's border again.
while in search for a cure at the same time.
