i don't watch a whole lot of tv but knowing that this exists and keeps getting renewed for more seasons makes me wonder where society is headed

i remember from my one sociology class that we make special accommodations for sick people with the explicit requirement that they want to get better and will make an effort to get better - and this is generally how i view obesity, it's fine to be obese so long as you're making a concious effort to get healthier

but it seems like morbidly obese people just keep making excuses (medical conditions that defy physics) and it's considered impolite to call them out on it these days

i'd like to think shame has a healthy function in society and we ought to shame family members who let themselves go like this

anything short of accepting fat as healthy is seen as shaming these days so i just go with the modern usage of the word

...not even close but I had a good buddy who was morbidly obese and the idea of shaming someone I care about is unthinkable .

I agree. I think people need to fully understand how unhealthy it is though and then be pressured, or "encouraged", to act upon it for their own sake as well as friend's and family

...which is not shaming . I encouraged my friend to take much better care of himself but I would not go so far as to make it emotionally painful for him .
