Paul Wellstone was the guy to talk to when it comes to reasoning with people of various walks of life.

Exactly. Even our basic assumptions must be questioned, analyzed, and studied.

While this study may make you say to yourself, "Well, duh!", there have also been other studies that question basic assumptions/common sense that have taught us something we may not have known before.

Cool story bro?

I await a study to tell me the sun will be going down today.

Such a study would be impossible.

Common sense does work most of the time, but psychological studies constantly shows people think they know more about cognition than they actually know.

So maybe we could stick to posting the studies that defy common sense?

I won't do that, but cognitive biases and various illusions such as the introspection illusion and illusory superiority are well established in psychology. People think too often that they're thinking rationally when in fact, they're not.

in the long run presenting contradictory evidence may work to convince people but it looks like facts really do not win immediate arguments after all when dealing with people who have strong political beliefs - and not only that, presenting contradictory evidence actually makes people double down with greater conviction on the demonstrably false beliefs they cherish

so the next time you're arguing with someone who denies the earth being more than 6000 years old, denies evolution, denies climate change, embraces trickle down economics, denies the link between smoking and cancer, believes iraq had wmds, thinks the free market is the solution to everything, or blames obama for hurricane katrina, know that you will only strengthen their beliefs by presenting them with evidence that contradicts their beliefs

Hey, that's kinda like bitg_pj saying that I was giving a 'groundless emotional argument' when I gave him the census statistics on fathers paying child support.

hmm next time I just won't bother and save myself some time

i like phil ^_^

though i do realize he's an anti-vaccer so i'm not surprised if there are other cases where he couldn't accept any stats/evidence that contradicted his beliefs

kinda like you ignoring the fact that as a percentage women shirk their duty on child support payments at almost twice the rate of men, and this is despite having reproduction and legal freedom that men do not have (abortion, child sanctuary and adoption) . Nearly one in 5 single parents are fathers.

women who fail to pay all of their child support are incarcerated only one-eighth as often as men with similar violations. Equality ftw amirite? When people try to fix the imbalances* in the laws here you get shrill feminist groups getting together mischaracterizing the issue to fear vote against it, because treating women like the responsible adults they should be is unfair. :o

* Feminists protest equality. Again. Bill SB250
Feminists in Florida have stopped throwing dictionaries around long enough to notice a nefarious bill in front of Florida’s Governor, Rick Scott, in which Senator Tom Lee has put forward the outrageous notion that women are capable adults, and that children are entitled to relationships with both parents following marital breakdown.
