18-55 is fairly good. That is wide to short telephoto. The biggest limitation is aperture (f3.5-f5.6 on a crop body doesn't allow for much in the way of bokeh / playing with thin depth of field). If you want that, just get a 35mm 1.8G (cheaper DX version).

Save your money, buy a nicer one d5300

The D5300 doesn't offer anything in the way of better image quality. It just offers better autofocus and some nicer features in the way of a tilty screen. The nearly $200 price hike over the D3300 isn't really worth it. As soon as you do that, you might as well go $200 over the D5300 to get a D7100, which offers a better more robust camera body, and most importantly a viewfinder that you can actually see out of with ease.

I think the D5300 and D3300 are both good choices, but the D3300 makes much more sense for someone on a budget.

D7100's are dirt fucking cheap now too.

I'd get a D5300 combo'd with a fast prime. 35 1.8 or 50 1.8. USED ofc.
