I too am starting out. I've found some decent materials online.

Memrise.com - Free and with app. Amazing way to memorise hundreds of topics. Tracks progress, more like a game, has pronounciation, can learn hirigana, katakana, even hundreds of kanji.

Realkana.com - Free easy to use mobile site. Great flash card style website to really make the kana stick. Has different style of scripts/fonts to look more like handwriting.

WaniKani.com - Free trial, then fees. Haven't tried this one too much, I'm not advanced enough yet I feel.

Anki - May have to pay for this one. Always popular standard flash card program.

As for books, I've started Genki I: An Integrated Course in Elementary Japanese I by Eri Banno; it has a lot of beginning material as well as Remembering the Kanji, Volume I by James W. Heisig. I hear it's never to early to start learning kanji.

That's where I sit currently. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them :D

Hey buddy. I use Duolingo to learn new languages. Though currently there is no Japanese to English course yet. You may be interested in learn others. Cheers!
